How to build Pidgin on linux

Acquire the stable source from www.pidgin.im or the current development code from monotone.
Stable: pidgin-2.6.4.tar.bz2
For monotone: Monotone How-To

The short version:
./configure
make
sudo make install

The long version:

There are many libraries that are needed for building pidgin and more depending on the features you need. I will try to compile a complete list of these and what they are needed for.

Pidgin-dev – should install most of the essential libraries.
libxss-dev - Use --disable-screensaver if you do not need XScreenSaver extension support,
this is required for detecting idle time by mouse and keyboard usage.
libstartup-notification0-dev - startup-notification is a library which allows programs to give the user visual feedback that they are being launched. This can be ignored if you run configure with the parameter –disable-startup-notification
libgtkspell-dev – run configure with –disable-gtkspell if you don't want spell checking.
libgstreamer0.10-dev – needed for sound support. If you don't need sound run configure with –disable-gstreamer
libgstfarsight0.10-dev – needed for voice and video chat support. Use –disable-vv if you don't want it
libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev – same as above.
libidn11-dev – I believe this is needed for XMPP and so GoogleTalk as well. It may be needed for other things as well. To build without it use –disable-idn
libmeanwhile-dev – Needed for Sametime protocol support. To disable run with –disable-meanwhile
libavahi-glib-dev – Needed for Bonjour support. To disable –disable-avahi
These may also be needed. I have yet to test each one individually to see if they are needed or not

libavahi-client-dev
network-manager-dev - Use --disable-nm if you do not need NetworkManager support.
libperl-dev - Use --disable-perl if you do not need Perl scripting support.
libgnutls-dev – Needed for SSL support used by MSN, GoogleTalk, Groupwise.
libnss3-dev – same as above though you only need one. It's a choice between GNU or Mozilla lol
Use --disable-nss --disable-gnutls if you do not need SSL support.
Tcl-dev - Use --disable-tcl if you do not need Tcl scripting support.
Tk-dev - Use --disable-tk if you do not need Tk scripting support.

I'm sure I've failed to list a great many but these were the ones that weren't on my laptop. I'll have to do it on a clean install in a VM and add to the list.
For debian based distros you can use this line to install the dependencies.

sudo apt-get install pidgin-dev libstartup-notification0-dev libgtkspell-dev libgstreamer0.10-dev libgstfarsight0.10-dev libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev libidn11-dev libmeanwhile-dev libavahi-glib-dev libavahi-core-dev libavahi-common-dev libavahi-client-dev network-manager-dev libperl-dev libgnutls-dev tcl-dev tk-dev libxss-dev

Now type './configure' and press enter. Also this is where you would add addition parameters like “--prefix=/usr”.
./configure –disable-screensaver --prefix=/usr

It will check for the needed libraries and components. It usually will tell you pretty clearly what you need to install. Just remember when it says to install something make sure you install the -dev package. Also it's usually a library and so starts with lib. If it says you need gstreamer then you install libgstreamer0.10-dev.

Now you can run make.
Type 'make' and press enter.
It takes a while to build pidgin usually.
Once that's done you can type 'sudo make install'

And you're done.
